Director Lee Chang-dong becomes the first Korean to receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival's Tribute Awards.
His new film "Possible Love," which announced the award, tells the story of a couple of laid-off workers and a documentary filmmaker couple who meet to produce a documentary and face each other's lives and hidden desires.
Following the invitation to the Special Presentations section, the TIFF Ebert Director Award that director Lee Chang-dong will receive is an award honoring film critic Roger Ebert, given to directors who have presented original visions to the film industry. Previously, Guillermo del Toro, Spike Lee, Denis Villeneuve, and Chloé Zhao have been recipients.
Director Lee Chang-dong has received worldwide acclaim, winning the Best Director Award at the Venice International Film Festival for "Oasis," the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Poetry," and the International Film Critics Award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Burning." The 51st Toronto International Film Festival will be held from September 10 to 20, with the awards ceremony on September 13.
Starring Jeon Do-yeon, Seol Kyung-gu, Jo In-sung, and Jo Yeo-jung, "Possible Love," directed by Lee Chang-dong for the first time in eight years, opens in theaters on September 23 and will be released on Netflix on November 6.
