Netflix has confirmed the production of a new series "Parasyte: Tamiya" with a target release date of 2027.
Director Yeon Sang-ho and production company Wowpoint are joining forces once again with this project, which is based on the masterpiece manga "Parasyte" by Hitoshi Iwaaki. Following "Parasyte: The Grey," which was reinterpreted with a Korean setting in 2024 and achieved global success, this marks another expansion of the universe.
"Parasyte: Tamiya" is an original story told from the perspective of Tamiya Ryoko, a dangerous parasite in the original work who takes the form of a human teacher. The story unfolds centered on Tamiya Ryoko's inner conflict as she contemplates coexistence with humanity while meeting the protagonist who coexists with Migi.
Director Yeon Sang-ho handles planning and writing, with writer Ryu Yong-jae participating as co-writer. Direction is undertaken jointly by Kensaku Kakimoto, director of "Glass Heart," and Kazuhiro Nakagawa, director of "Double," promising sensational visuals and thrilling action.
Actress Shiori Kutsuna takes on the role of protagonist Tamiya Ryoko. Having been active on the global stage in films such as "Deadpool 2" and Netflix's "Rikishi," Kutsuna Shiori will delicately capture the complex inner world of a human, a parasite, and a being in transition. Director Yeon Sang-ho praised her for excellently expressing the process of understanding existence.
Director Yeon Sang-ho stated that he wanted to capture the essence of parasytes through the profound character of Tamiya Ryoko, and asked for anticipation toward this new attempt that harmonizes respect for the original work with the directors' individuality.
The original "Parasyte" is a masterpiece that has surpassed 25 million cumulative copies in circulation and has received global love by depicting the symbiosis and struggle between parasitic organisms that occupy the human brain and high school student Shinichi Izumi, who becomes host to the parasite Migi.
"Parasyte: Tamiya," which is garnering global fans' expectations, will be released worldwide on Netflix in 2027.
